Title

Information about the town of Vir

The island of Vir is located near the city of Zadar (26 km), and is connected by bridge to the mainland of the Republic of Croatia. Looking northeast from Vir stretches the island of Pag, and the southwestern grants a splendid view of the Vir sea and the islands of Ugljan, Sestrunj, Rivanj, Molat and Ist. One of the 300 islands and islets of the Zadar archipelago and 1186 islands and cliffs in the Croatian Adriatic.

It is twentieth in size among the Croatian islands and eight in the Zadar archipelago. The surface of the island is 22.38 km2, or 10.12 km in length and 4.25 km at its widest. Its coastline is 31.43 km long. By sea the distance from Zadar is 15 NM. Given the traffic link (bridge), visitors can experience a typical island atmosphere on the one hand while at the same time enjoying the mobility provided by the modern road network.

The average annual temperature on Vir is 15 °C, while in July it is 24.5 °C. The climate favors the cultivation of vines, figs and olives.

Vir is first mentioned in 1069. Of the historical buildings, the most significant is Kaštelina, built in 1502 for the defense against the Turks. Another ancient city, Nin, is located near Vir. It is the oldest Croatian royal town with many historical sights, including the smallest cathedral.
The coastline of Vira boasts many beaches, from sandy, pebble and rocky. Part of the pine woods with crystal clear sea make this island ideal for family vacations. The forested Školjić islet is a particular curiosity, with its long sandy beach, close to the bridge connecting the island of Vir with the mainland.
Apart from swimming, windsurfing, sailing, jet-skiing and other water sports, the lovers of hiking can enjoy the magnificent panorama of the whole of Vir, the nearby islands, and mount Velebit (1750 m) from the top of hill Bandire (112 m).

On some Vir beaches, especially in the Sapavac bay, near the Venetian fortress – Kaštelina, there are peleoid mud baths to treat rheumatic diseases. Because of the position on the Croatian Adriatic, Vir is an ideal starting point for excursions to the surrounding national parks: Paklenica with imposing canyons, Kornati with its 200 islands and islets, Krka waterfalls and Plitvice lakes.
